TrailSense is a project where we built a simple system to measure how many people use a hiking trail. The goal was to find a low-cost and privacy-friendly way to better understand visitor flows in outdoor areas.
Many regions don’t really know how many people are using their trails. Existing solutions are often:
Expensive Not made for remote outdoor areas Not very transparent in how they collect dataBecause of this, it’s hard to manage overcrowding or plan improvements.
Instead of using cameras or manual counting, we used WiFi signals from smartphones.
Smartphones regularly send out so-called probe requests. Our system detects these signals and uses them to estimate how many people pass by.
Important: No personal data is stored, data is only counted and aggregated, everything stays anonymous
