Project

A boy. A game he can't escape. And a wall of robots between him and the exit.

Final Checkpoint throws you straight into the deep end: Sam, an ordinary kid, gets yanked inside a video game where survival has one rule — beat the machines or stay trapped forever. What follows is a relentless two-minute action sequence built for pure adrenaline. Sam tears through the first wave of robots with tactical, calculated precision, gunning them down one by one — until the boss robot crashes in. It sweeps the environment, locks onto Sam, and opens fire. Thinking fast, Sam hurls a smoke grenade to break the scan, then lands an EMP that shuts the boss down cold. Blackout. Story over.
Our goal was a look that lives between two worlds — semi-realistic, semi-stylized — carried by a bold cool-and-warm color language that drives the mood from tension to triumph. Fast, punchy, and cinematic from frame one.
At the heart of the project was a hybrid pipeline we were determined to crack: Unreal Engine's Lumen as our real-time renderer for speed and lighting flexibility, paired with Houdini for genuinely realistic FX simulations. Getting these two to talk to each other was the real challenge. Importing FX into Unreal meant leaning heavily on VDBs, which we solved using the free Zibra plugin from Fab. VDBs don't emit light on their own, though — so we hand-animated the lighting on every single FX element to make the smoke, energy, and destruction feel truly integrated into each shot. It was painstaking, and it paid off.
From motion capture to real-time blueprints, from smoke sims to hand-crafted lighting, every discipline came together to pull Sam out of the game — and pull the audience in. Final Checkpoint is our love letter to fast-paced action and the messy, thrilling craft of blending real-time and simulation-based VFX.
