Echoes of the Past

Echoes of the Past is a short audiovisual journey that explores the hidden origins of words that remain part of the everyday Mexican/Spanish language. Many words commonly used in Mexico, such as cacao , elote (corn), and even México itself, have survived for centuries, carrying traces of the Nahuatl language and the worldview of the Mexica civilization that once flourished in the Valley of Mexico.

Through a cinematic voyage across landscapes, architecture, and natural elements, the project reveals the etymological roots and original meanings behind these words. By connecting language with place, memory, and identity, the film invites viewers to recognize that they are more than simple vocabulary; they are living echoes of a cultural heritage that continues to shape modern Mexican identity.

Developed using Unreal Engine 5 and Houdini, the project combines real-time cinematography with procedural simulations to recreate the ancient world from which these words emerged. From the procedural growth of cacao pods and corn to the reconstruction of pre-Hispanic environments, the technical pipeline supports the narrative, transforming language, history, and nature into an immersive visual experience.
