Digital Tool for Structural Accessibility Audits

Our client myAbilty is a company specializing in consulting on accessibility in a wide range of areas, from online presence to building structures. We got approached by the building accessibility department,  performing on-site audits of accessibility of their customers' facilities. This means they visit the sites in person, check on accessibility issues and requirements, and develop a final report for their customers where possible issues, legal implications and possible solutions are listed.

Currently myAbility auditors on-site capture all measurements, dimensions, pictures and additional information by hand and with multiple devices. They are guided by a physical 14 page paper checklist, which is neither handy nor adjustable in the ways the auditors would need it. Due to the unstructured and separated data collection, the post-visit data processing, digitalisation and audit-report creation can take up to weeks of time. This leads to very high costs for myAbility and their clients, as well as overwork of myAbility’s employees.
Our solution is the development of an application-prototype that simplifies and optimizes the process of data capturing during on-site audits and enables straightforward generation of accessibility reports. The prototype is designed for iPad tablets. This choice is motivated by the volume and complexity of a standard audit. The solution was tested with current myAbility editors and iterated based on their feedback.

We designed the full auditing flow, full with audit creation and editing, filling out the audit with taking digital measurements with the camera, taking pictures, sketches, voice notes, and generating the full PDF audit. According to myAbility, if this app is integrated in the workflow, it can save a full working day of paperwork.

In conclusion, our project of “Digitalisation of on-site-audit Checklist for accessibility” led to the development, testing and adjustment of a prototype for a digitalized on-site audit checklist tool for the company MyAbility. During the project we were able to collect requirements outreaching the prototype’s goals, which will be later handed over to the app-developing studio in coordination with MyAbility.
