QUINT is a 2D top-down pixel bullet-hell bossfight game focused entirely on dodging. The boss, Obelith, progresses through four phases, each featuring a variety of arena-wide projectile patterns as well as spontaneous aimed attacks designed to catch you off guard and disrupt your rhythm as you dance and roll around the arena. Will you be able to stay calm and survive Obelith’s onslaught?
In addition to regular eight-directional movement, there is a dodge roll mechanic that provides more options for evading attacks. It allows the player to roll through projectiles, ignoring their collision for a short time. However, each roll is followed by a brief exhaustion state that temporarily slows the player’s movement as a trade-off. While exhausted, the player cannot initiate another dodge roll until fully recovered.
During the roll, the player is unable to stop moving but can continuously adjust the rolling direction, allowing for more precise control over positioning.
To prevent the dodge roll from becoming a universal solution to every precarious situation, the boss, Obelith, also uses area-of-effect attacks that ignore the player's invulnerability during dodging. These must be avoided by positioning outside of the clearly indicated attack area.
Each phase of the boss, Obelith, features a series of stage-wide projectile pattern attacks. Obelith cycles through these attacks in a fixed chronological order. After completing all stage attacks in a phase, he initiates a phase transition before beginning the next, continuing this pattern until no phases remain.
Each stage attack follows a specific, predefined behaviour, resulting in a distinct, learnable pattern. This encourages the player to actively engage with and adapt to each challenge. Combined with a high difficulty level, it introduces a solid replayability factor - rewarding players who improve through repeated attempts and accumulated experience until they ultimately succeed in overcoming Obelith.
Each phase includes a set of unique boss attacks that introduce a dynamic element the player must anticipate, react and adapt to in real time, even while managing ongoing stage attack patterns. At fixed intervals, Obelith executes a random boss attack from a predefined list specific to that phase.
These attacks may take the form of sudden bursts of projectiles varying in speed or angle, or as area-of-effect strikes that differ in shape, orientation, and size.
Some of these attacks require the player to use their dodge roll to avoid damage - meaning that being in an exhausted state at the wrong moment can have fatal consequences. This further encourages the player to learn and recognise Obelith’s various offensive measures in order to respond appropriately and consistently in strained situations.
