“Spot a Bot” detects content that bots create on Twitter
On social media platforms, we are confronted with big amount of content that bots are generating. We want to raise awareness on that with our project
It is sometimes difficult to recognise bots on social media. Post from a human and post from a bot can’t always be distinguished in a timeline. This might have negative consequences, because people can be manipulated with distorted information
We want to deeply understand the impact of bots in social media. Therefore, in this project we developed an algorithm that categorizes Twitter profiles and tweets as bot- or human-generated. We publish the results as interactive visualisation on our website. Our data is credible, comprehensible and transparent. To explain the process, we use Explainable AI approach.

Project Description
The project “Spot a Bot” focuses on bot detection on Twitter in order to raise awareness regarding the amount of machine-generated content we are confronted with on social media platforms. Bots are sometimes difficult to recognize in social media. If a single post from a bot appears in the timeline, it cannot always be distinguished from a human post. This might have negative consequences, as people can be manipulated by showing them distorted information. To deepen the understanding of the impact of bots in social media, the aim of this project is to develop an algorithm for categorizing Twitter profiles and tweets as bot- or human-generated. The results of the classification will be published as interactive visualizations on a website. In order to present our data in a credible, comprehensible and transparent manner, the underlying process will be explained in an Explainable AI approach.
