Willing

Willing is more than just a concept album. It is an album that utilizes materiality, visual and haptic elements to celebrate the seemingly unnecessary, the unhandiness of physical sound carriers and their packaging. The result is a pop up-book with songs that act like the background music of the scenes that are depicted in the book. On a meta level, the album tries to make the point that physical sound carriers are the home of the songs that are live in them. The topic of location, and the concept of „home“ are also the guiding themes in the album’s narrative, as it is about the small town Willing and it’s different places. These places are viewed as containers for stories and lives that are taking place inside them. This idea is visualized in the connection between the pictures and the music: the places depicted in the booklet seem oddly lifeless, until the certain songs inspire the listeners mind, give hints to what sounds are usually heard at this location, and make the places come alive.

Willing ist ein Album, das du nicht auf Spotify anhören solltest. Denn dieses Album erzählt nicht nur musikalisch, sondern auch visuell. Es ist ein Album zum Anfassen, Aufklappen, Entdecken. Es ist ein Spaziergang durch ein oberbayrisches Dorf, welches sich über das Booklet vor deinen Augen aufbaut, und durch die Musik zum Leben erwacht.

Willing ist ein kleines Album mit 6 instrumentalen Liedern. Jedes Lied ist nach einem besonderen Ort in Willing benannt und enthält Tonaufnahmen von diesem Ort oder imitierende Geräusche. Jeder „Ort“ hat im Pop-Up-Booklet eine Aufklapp-Seite. Mal versteckt und mal plakativ an die Wand geschmiert, verrät der Ort eine Kleinigkeit über Willing. In den Orten sind (fast) nie Menschen zu sehen, aber ihr Dasein „hallt nach“ - So sieht man Sitzabdrücke, abgenutzte Türen, stehen gelassenes Werkzeug. Dadurch wirken die Orte komisch leblos, verträumt - und erwachen mit der Musik zum Leben.

Nicht nur im Narrativ spielen Themen wie Verortung und Heimat eine Rolle; auch im Produktkonzept ist Verortung ein Zentrales Thema. Dieses Album geht von der Grundidee aus, dass Tonträger eine Art Zuhause für die Songs sind, die darin leben. Dass im besten Fall eine starke Verknüpfung und gegenseitige Unterstützung von Musik und Artwork stattfindet, und diese die Hörerfahrung bereichert. So wie Menschen immer von ihrer Heimat geprägt sind und sie einen Teil der Identität ausmacht, so möchte ich darstellen, wie auch Musik so eine „Heimat“ haben kann, und wie Musik und Artwork unauflösbar miteinander verbunden werden können.
